Sculptural Installation
From everyday objects of popular culture to handmade treasures made by loved ones, to heirlooms handed down through generations, to the most mundane of items that we buy, receive, or use, there is a story and an energy to everything. And because of the specialness of an object, we make a commitment to it. We keep, carry, cherish, save, store, hide, or box up these items because sentiment and society has told us that most everything seems worth saving.
The proliferation of retail outlets and Dollar Stores across the landscape, fired up by mass media marketing and “amazonmania”, directly feed our desire to continue consuming, finding and keeping more things, which correlates and also seems to fuel the population of ever-so-prevalent Self-Storage, “Cube-Smart” facilities.
This installation bears witness to both aspects on the spectrum of saving: what we deeply cherish and what no longer carries a charge.
A time of assessment to try to reduce, reuse or recycle also impacts our choice to save or pass on and still the stream of how objects come in and out of daily life.
